Vilnius City Stitch Central Station

International Open Competition Vilnius, Lithuania

with JIM (CAN)

2021

Reacting to the intense infrastructural program of the solicitation, we embraced the spatial gap in the city created by the railway station and aimed for a restorative approach.

City Stitch repairs the urban fabric as a new multi-modal mobility hub and urban framework that works in two ways. First, activating railyard edges transforms the industrial buffer with new programs. Parks, shared streets, plazas, and cultural amenities reach out and bring in new life. A nimble bridge network unifies the rooftop landscape, and allows passage across and access to platforms, adding a covered colonnade for snowy day strolling. Diaphanous towers mark entrances as new vertical connections to the layers of infrastructure.

Over time, the stitched edges will instead operate as a new city center, reshaping a new future for Vilnius through robust urban metabolism.
